Beetle Control - Dorset Pest Control

With so many different species of beetle indigenous to the UK, it would be impossible to mention them all. Three main types of beetle that we are commonly asked to control are the Carpet Beetle (whose larvae are also known as 'Wooly Bears'), the Biscuit Beetle and the Saw-Toothed Grain Beetle.

Did You Know?
The Biscuit Beetle is commonly found in your larder or kitchen and is quite capable of penetrating paper, cardboard and many other common types of food packaging - including tin foil and even sheets of lead!!

Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus Verbasci)

Carpet Beetle - Dorset Pest Control
Size: 2 - 3 mm.
Lifespan: Approx 12 months
Lifecycle: Up to 40 eggs per female, 7-8 Larval stages, 8-12m til Adult.
Risks: Significant damage to carpets, clothing and soft furnishings.
Look for: Banded, bristly larvae (5mm).

Carpet beetles can cause serious damage to your home or business. They have a long stage of larval development of up to 1 year - and it is the larvae that actually cause the damage to natural fibres and fabrics.
The adults themselves only survive for 2 to 6 weeks but can lay up to 40 eggs in this time.

Biscuit Beetle (Stegobium Paniceum)

Biscuit Beetle - Dorset Pest Control
Size: 2 - 3 mm.
Lifespan: Approx 2 - 4 months
Lifecycle: Females lay up to 75 eggs at once - larva can last several months.
Risks: Significant damage to food, books and leather items.
Look for: Small white grubs (larvae).

Biscuit beetles feed on a diverse range of dried foods, spices, pharmaceutical products, hair, books, and leather items. Like the Carpet Beetle above, the larvae actually cause most damage. Their source is often linked to birds nests, while nearby food sources and/or high humidity levels can also encourage infestation.

Saw Toothed Grain Beetle ()

Saw Toothed Grain Beetle - Dorset Pest Control
Size: 2.5 - 3.5 mm.
Lifespan: Approx 1 - 3 months
Lifecycle: Up to 400 eggs per female
(6-10 per day).
Risks: Destroys vast quantities of stored grain products.
Look for: 'Hot Spots' & Mould growth on grain and other stored products.

The Saw-Toothed Grain beetle is the most destructive grain beetle in the UK, causing serious damage and contamination.
Control methods can include infra-red location of hot-spots, residual sprays and dusts. Fumigation may be used for larger consignments.
Insect monitors will help initially survey the extent of an infestation.
